| The college was established to enable a large number of students to have access to higher education.
The departments are run by about 44 full time teachers 11 part-timers and several guests lecturers. All courses are affiliated to the University of Burdwan.

| In today's world of explosion in research in the fields of synthetic chemistry, green chemistry and nanotechnology, the major problem in the academia and the industry is that the number of competent chemists to cater to these new branches of learning are scarce. Accordingly, higher education in chemistry has largely become restricted in our part of the world. This is both due to lack of proper faculty and also very high expenses involved. The number of institutions producing chemists of such quality is also very few. The college has always felt that its Chemistry Department has sufficient potential and capability to produce high quality modern chemists to cater to the need of the day. With this view, a Post Graduate Department in Chemistry has been launched in 2005. Vivekananda Mahavidyalaya, Burdwan is the only constituent college under the University of Burdwan to be granted affiliation for running a PG course in Chemistry. |
